UPDATE: Avoid the Late Fee! Jakara Sikh Youth Conference

Prices go up after Monday. Take a moment at work, take a quick break from your finals, but take it now! A commenter asked to for a meet-up at the conference. A few of the bloggers will be in attendance so come meet a few of the faces behind the nonsense we write! Register now at www.jakara.org

———————————————————————————

From our discussions on dividing Gurdwaras to Green Gurdwaras; from confronting the demons within to forging a new consensus; from questions of grassroots movements to moving beyond generation two blues; all are invited to attend JAKARA 2008 and discuss face-to-face these important issues.

jakaraconf.jpgThe Jakara Movement Sikh youth conference is only three weeks away with registration closing on June 16th. REGISTER NOW to avoid late fees.

Who: YOU!
What: JAKARA 2008: Growing with our Gurdwara

Where: FRESNO, CA

When: June 19-22, 2008
Why: Because YOU need to be there. Visit the website for more information.

Yes I had urged all to attend in a different post, but consider this a friendly reminder.

Plan to attend, even if you just want to see life beyond bhangra or shoooooooooot, because you just want another Sikh T-shirt (no, you don’t get those ones).

    1) The conference is located close to the city centre so that attendees can retreat to clubs and pubs after each conference day. Things like this are commonplace and hardly discouraged.

    2) Commitment to principles of gurmat is not a high priority. The event is more about over-analyzing and debating of everything than real problem solving.

    3) More of a social 'gup-shup' event than a Panthic working group.

These are comments from past attendees to whom I have spoken. Could you please tell me if these are true?

    1) I can assure you the rumors are not true. We have NEVER had any incidences of people retreating to 'clubs and pubs.' We have a zero tolerance policy during the conference for any intoxicant. Unfortunately unsubstantiated rumors and demonizing are the work of slanderers. If they can point to any single incident or even how such behavior was not 'discouraged' in years passed as opposed to broad generalizations, then I would be truly surprised. However, there are no such instances and instead every year people throw about rumors. Surprisingly we find that most of these rumors are by people from Canada that have never even attended. Even more funny is that a person would really believe Fresno has a 'city centre.'

    2) With regards to the commitment to Gurmat not being a high priority? We believe that we only operate within the fold of the Panthic Rehat Maryada as ratified at the Akal Takht and distributed by the SGPC.

    3) Look at the agenda and then decide. Although I expect few Canadians would truly travel all the way down to Fresno.

    Best of Luck
