Sikhs@War
A new film, by Turbanology filmmaker Jay Singh-Sohal, discusses the presence of Sikhs in the World Wars. Sikhs at War is a free online educational short-film exploring one young person’s journey to discover the invaluable contribution made by his community during the First World War. This documentary has been made specifically with young people in mind. Educators can use the film as a resource to find out more about Sikhs who fought during both World Wars for Great Britain.
From their simple village life in the Panjab regions of modern day India and Pakistan, the Sikhs volunteered in their thousands to fight for Britain. During the Great War their numbers rose from 35,000 at the beginning of 1915 after the crisis in Europe turned into War, to more than 100,000 who were in active service by the time it ended in 1918.
The Sikhs formed 20% of the British Indian Army in action despite being only 2% of the population of India. They fought on all fronts in Europe, from Turkey and in Africa to the fields of Flanders. Their bravery is legendary – of the 22 Military Crosses awarded for conspicuous gallantry to Indians during the conflict 14 were rewarded to Sikh soldiers.
But for the thousands that left their homelands to join the fighting many did not return. During both the Great War (1914-18) and World War Two (1939-45) Sikh soldiers killed in action numbered 83,005 with 109,045 more wounded. One again despite being a minority in British India.

Great. So we're agreed then. You obviously acknowledge that the independant Sikh Kingdom of Punjab was not part of hindu India. So why are you holding on to us ? We detest you. We find you embarrasing. Everything about you is neauseating. We can't wait to disassociate ourselves from you. And then there's you holding on to us for dear life. Loving us so much that you even try and convince us that we're part of you. That, of course, is a grave insult, but just how sad and desperate a people does that make you ?
Of all the inventions in the world it is this ; the internet, that has most greatly benefitted the Indian hindu. It turns goats into lions. The world's dirtiest, most unhygenic, smallest, weakest, most pathetic men can log onto the internet and finally grow enough balls and add another foot to their height enabling them to insult sikhs and sikhism. Unfortunately for you Kamaljit Gupta, in a few hours time when we both turn the computer off : you will go back to being a timid goat. Whereas I shall still be a 6'2" lion.
Can you please repeat Kamaljit, what you said in your last message to me. The one where you compared this study by the British Medical Council (the national body in Britain that overseas and licences the physician profession) to Hitler and nazi germany. I dunno whether to laugh or cry. Because a respected in-depth modern day study into children's health and strength in modern day Britain found the Sikhs to be the tallest of all (including white children) and the Hindus the smallest. Smallest of them all. Smaller and weaker than anybody and everybody else. As I said earlier, it's all just one big conspiracy against the poor little hindu. History describes him as pathetic. The present describes him as insignificantly small and weak. His minority countrymen are so embarassed by him they wish to disassociate themselves from him and make their own country. His bridges fall down. His roof collapses. He welcomes athaletes from around the world with shit on the bedroom floor…..snakes under the bed and dengue fever. But rather than sorting out these endemic problems he'd rather spend his time putting the computer on….adding another 12 inches to his height…..logging onto sikh discussions….and convincing the sikhs that it's great to be Indian. All in a days worl of a right wing hindu nationalist.
