Silver for the Prince of Patiala

Although we have been following the story for some time, it seems Rohanpreet Singh, the Prince of Patiala, fell short in winning SaReGaMaPa’s Little Champ’s competition. Although winning the “North Zone” that includes Punjab as well as having a 200,000 margin in the ‘international voting’, receiving 3,847,176 put him far short of Assam’s Anamika Choudhury, who gained 4,482,738 votes.
Despite falling short of the prize, Rohanpreet won a place in the heart of Sikhdom (at least until the next competition)! So here is the hero of the moment’s homecoming in all of its stereotypical glory. Oh well I am also a sucker for it too….

I honestly don't get why we should be cheering for a young boy in a stupid singing competition just because he happens to be from a Sikh family and keeps his hair. I mean, the type of music they are requiring these kids to sing, and the type of atmosphere in which you see him performing even in the video above, it does not seem fitting for the Sikh community to be supporting it. The kids on the show were singing songs about how drinking is good, smoking is good, obsession with cash is good, obsession with another person's body is good, and attachment to another person is good. Are these values we want to celebrate in our youth?

You may be right. Cheer/don’t cheer, take it with a grain of salt. Although I don’t really recall any songs about smoking is good. In fact I don’t even recall him singing songs about how drinking is good. Come to think of it, are you really giving a commentary about Rohanpreet or a diatribe against certain types of Punjabi music?

I agree with Bobby when he says why should we cheer for someone just because they are Sikh? But I really hate the puritanism of his later message, as if Sikhs are morons who can't enjoy music not related to religion. What a grim vision of life, like some religious autocrat in medieval Catholic Inquisition Spain or modern day Islamic Fundamentalist Saudi Arabia in which music of life is disallowed. The puritanism of some Sikhs today is deeply disturbing.

Personally I was rooting for Rohanpreet because he is genuinely talented. He is a role-model for Sikh boys around the world, but also a role-model for ALL youth in his generation. If he gives some confidence to a young Sardar out there, good for him. Overall he depicted himself as a humble, respectable, and fun person. I have followed this show for a long time, and have seen him become bigger and bigger in the hearts of ALL Indians (not only Sikhs). He is a special boy, and my only hope is that he remain humble as he gains greater success (which will inevitably happen).

To be honest, I'm not a fan of all this 'role model' spiel. Everyone is an individual and it's not right to put the burden of representation on anyone. If they screw up they get lynched for it. Just let people do their thing and don't expect them to be your saviour or make their own choices in life.

Pablo, agree with you strongly. He is young. His world view reflects his parents world view. Things may change when he 'grows up'. He is a sweet kid, a good singer and I hope he does well-the same goes for the winner of the competetion. BTW, I dont recall any songs promoting liquor/smoking etc. either.

You can cheer for Rohanpreet just because he's damn good. (So were some of the other participants.) He has a great strong voice at such a young age. And he chose decent songs so I commend his counselors. He kills it, go Rohan, you rock!
I wish he would speak Punjabi more but I can understand why he has to speak Hindi…

He is a awesome singer. No one said just cause you're Sikh you have to support him. I support him because I feel he is a good kid and is really a good singer. No one said YOU have to cheer for him, but its good on you if you do. I support my fellow Sikhs, and Sikhs should always support each other whether they are Monay, Keshadari, Amritdari whatever boundaries you want to make.
