The Future of Panjab?

Bleak is all I can say!

Last week, Raja Parkash Badal crowned his son, the young prince, the new Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab.  In a move unprecedented even in the nepotistic land that is India, Parkash Singh Badal coronated his son.  Maybe it shouldn’t be so surprising in the land of five rivers, where Badal Senior had already elevated his family members to 5 of the top 18 cabinet seats.

I can hardly think of a similar situation since the death of Sardar (Maharaja) Ranjit cartoon_sukhbir1_copy.jpgSingh where political power in the region had been so concentrated in the hands of one family.  Although the background noise of protest has been broadcasted by the usual oppositional parties, with the exception of an excellent analysis in the World Sikh News, most Panthic circles have been silent in any sort of critical analysis of the impact.

The corruption of the Badal family is striking.  Robbing the state blind, Parkash Badal rose from a midsize zamindar, owning 80 acres of land, to commanding properties and businesses worth millions of dollars in Punjab, the US, Australia, Canada, and throughout the world.  They have jet planes at their command, as well as entire transport, mining, and cable network businesses, not to mention lucrative land near prominent upcoming projects such as the Chandigarh International Airport and the new six-lane express high way in the woodworks.

Badal Senior has masterfully played the Sikhs (I have discussed his successes in previous posts) and has completely subjugated the levers of Sikhdom to his rule.  With an iron fist he runs the SGPC, completely controls the selection of Jathedar, and unilaterally transformed the historic Shiromani Akali Dal from a Sikh party, to a so-called Punjabi party that cares little for Sikhs or even for Punjab, beyond political appointments and the continued accrual of wealth by Badal’s coteries.

Kaka Badal (Sukhbir) studied at CSU Long Beach during the dark days of the 1980s in Punjab and was brought back only when the rising power base amongst the Sikhs was completely crushed by the Indian army.  As scary as Parkash Badal’s autocratic rule has been over the past three decades, Sukhbir is said to be many times worse.  Despite Sukhbir’s attesting that he will “continue to fight for the implementation of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution” (wow, never heard that before!), Sikhs should not hold their breath.  Unfortunately, Kaka Badal is being given the levers of power.  While I believe that the nepotism and attempts to concentrate powers will further intensify, I doubt that Kaka Badal is as adept as his father.  The “baby boy” spoiled brat mentality is far worse and will create new enemies.  Hopefully a “third way” will seize upon such an opportunity.  The future of Punjab will depend on it.

  1. Yes Teg, the real story here is the existence of all those cartoonishly evil Hindus, somehow managing to make the time to subvert a state bureaucracy while 50% of them are dying of malnutrition.

  2. Teg says:

Corrupt Badloo and now his Choocha Sukhbir will continue to be fostered on the Sikh nation with complete protection from Hindu agencies and their Hindu masters in New Delhi. When nations become occupied and enslaved, their leaders are also chosen by their occupiers. Badloo has been effectively used to destroy Sikhs and their institutions which are now effectively controlled by Hindu agencies with front men in turbans. Don’t be fooled by the so called elections and other stunts. Wheather it is Congress or Akalis, only the color of the turban changes, the role is the same as minor minions of their Hindu master and occupiers who are treating Punjab as a colony to be exploited.
