Baba Blacksheep

In certain cultures, memorization has always been a means of oral transference of knowledge through the generations. My father can quote so much random poetry. I see others that can quote entire passages from Waris Shah’s Heer. Although some of us still take the time to memorize Sikh prayers and gurbani, I wonder how much oral knowledge is about to be lost in our generation?

Here is a look at one government school in Punjab. Interesting how nursery rhymes there are sung in a manner different than elementary schools here. Does anyone else notice the subtle differences in promoting a ‘rote’ model? Well, even if you don’t and I am just seeing something that isn’t there, enjoy the video and enjoy your weekend!

A quick note that was pointed out to me by a close friend….Where are the girls?

We see only 2 lines of girls as opposed to 3 lines of boys. The girls' lines are not nearly as long nor as crowded as that of the boys'.

I am not sure where in rural Punjab this footage was taken, but it also seems a snapshot of the rural sex imbalance. This is truly tragic.

Depending on where this was taken, and whether kids in this school are from only one pind or many, this may be a tragic snapshot of the sex imbalance. But a precautionary note- this may also simply be a school that attracts kids from various neighboring pinds, where parents are unwilling to send daughters to a school that is not within their own pind, while they are willing to send their sons. This is also very problematic, but it's hard to tell just by the video how many girls are missing because they're at home, and how many girls are just missing.

You also forgot that maybe all the girls got sick on the same day or were at the kooh for 3rd grade ditch day? (jk)

True Reema, we'll never really know. However, following Occam's razor, when the sex imbalance is already known to be even worse in rural areas, it seems to me the most likely of the many possibilities.
