Price of an Honor Killing

Although the Hothi murder has been covered by my fellow Langa(w)riters, the case has re-appeared in the news.

To catch everyone up, in 2007 Gurparkash Singh Khalsa is alleged to have killed Ajmer Singh Hothi in Stockton, after he felt “dishonored” by a relationship and possible aborted pregnancy between Hothi and his daughter.

Khalsa is now behind bars in a San Joaquin prison.  In the latest twist, the Times of India reports “Sikh Man slapped with USD 15million lawsuit.” (Why his religion is relevant, I am not sure as even the article in the Stockton Record is only “Victim’s family sues suspect in honor killing“, but I digress).

The TOI article reports:

A Sikh man [again I think this is the only addition in the TOI article, but I digress], awaiting trial in an honour killing case, has been slapped with a whopping USD 15 million lawsuit in California’s civil court by the victim’s family.

Hothi’s family seeks the money to compensate for their loss and to send a message, their attorney Steven Brown said.

“They want to make it clear that he needs to be held accountable,” Brown was quoted as saying by recordnet.com.[link]

While I don’t think I can truly comprehend the pain being felt by the Hothi family after the murder fo their son and husband, I can understand they want Khalsa to be held responsible.  However, if the large sum of money is to prevent honor killings in the future, I doubt that this will have a lasting effect.

I know for sure, that TOI and the rediff too are somehow wanting to perform their hidden agenda…and it makes one wonder that the Sangh Parivar is surely sneaking into these publications..take for example the case of Tarun Vijay, who TOI promotes enthusiastically with his editorials.

  3. TOI and rediff have their own agendas, I'm sure.

Suing for large amounts of money is an American sport and this is typical behaviour.

This will have no effect on 'honour' killings whatsoever. All it does is make the Hothi family look like mercenary types who are trying to capitalise on the murder of their son/husband.

How painful it is to see the words 'murderer' and Khalsa' linked.
