Sikhs@War

A new film, by Turbanology filmmaker Jay Singh-Sohal, discusses the presence of Sikhs in the World Wars.  Sikhs at War is a free online educational short-film exploring one young person’s journey to discover the invaluable contribution made by his community during the First World War.  This documentary has been made specifically with young people in mind.  Educators can use the film as a resource to find out more about Sikhs who fought during both World Wars for Great Britain.

From their simple village life in the Panjab regions of modern day India and Pakistan, the Sikhs volunteered in their thousands to fight for Britain. During the Great War their numbers rose from 35,000 at the beginning of 1915 after the crisis in Europe turned into War, to more than 100,000 who were in active service by the time it ended in 1918.

The Sikhs formed 20% of the British Indian Army in action despite being only 2% of the population of India. They fought on all fronts in Europe, from Turkey and in Africa to the fields of Flanders. Their bravery is legendary – of the 22 Military Crosses awarded for conspicuous gallantry to Indians during the conflict 14 were rewarded to Sikh soldiers.

But for the thousands that left their homelands to join the fighting many did not return. During both the Great War (1914-18) and World War Two (1939-45) Sikh soldiers killed in action numbered 83,005 with 109,045 more wounded. One again despite being a minority in British India.

This is what I call GENUINE and REAL activism, unlike Valarie's money milking all-for-herself activism. She does everything for her fame and money. Period.

That’s easy. Sighs were the pets of the British raj…we enjoyed such great perks from being good colonized subjects that’s freedom wasn’t a priority.

Mai: Its much, much, more complicated than that. Of course something like 90%+ of those executed for insurgency against the british were Sikh…but that wasn't before the British irrigated what were previously uninhabited wastelands in the Punjab and gave it to the Sikhs to farm. Similarly:
"the Sikhs volunteered in their thousands to fight for Britain."
Unless the writer wasn't careful with his/her words, I read "volunteered" and not "coerced."

Kabza: From my knowledge of Sikh history (I am HIndu) I was under the impression that Punjab had been ruled by the Sikhs prior to British invasion and that way back in Sikh history Banda Singh Bahadur had given the Sikhs land to cultivate. I believe all races in India including Pharsees, Hindus and Muslims 'volunteered' for the British as it was the only way to make a living. Also was not Gandhi instrumental in delaying India's independence which could have been gotten as early as 1921 because he wanted to keep the British happy and not throw them out?

Forgive me brother Harinder but Wikipedia is not a credible source. I believe whoever has the most resources and time to spare dominates the information there. However going back to your earlier point were not the Dogras responsible for the loss of Punjab to the British and as a consequence the Hindu Brahmins were given Kashmir and Jammu to rule by the British. The Khalsa was betrayed by the Hindu Brahmins not the Biharis and UPwallahs. The Hindu Brahmins sided with the British to ensure that ALL of India would be enslaved, now they rule India instead of the British and the situation is even worst.

After being beaten by east india co. the disbanded sikh soldiers had nothing to do,they had no skills except infantary, there were no jobs,so sikhs like every other ethnic group availed the first oppurtunity that came by.As for the deaths in ww1 & 2 it is the nature of the beast,if as they say 80000 sikh soldiers died i am sure they killed the same amount if not more,of their enemy soldiers.Sikhs always show exemplary valour & loyalty when they are under somebody else's command,it is what they do under there own commanders is reprehensible.

  19. Historian says:

I would like to remind the posters here that Sikh soldiers during the WWI and WW2 fought and yes, killed the enemy to save us from facism…from the likes of Hitler and Mussolini. If they had not volunteered one of two things might have happened. Firstly Hilter and his allies might not have been defeated and we all know what he did to the Jews and what he wanted to do to the world. Secondly the deal for India's Independence included India's support of Britain for WW2. If the Sikhs had not 'volunteered' the deal might have fallen through and India might not have been freed. Therefore the owe the Sikhs in double measure – for their resistance against the British (Bhagat Singh et al) and for their participation and victory during the WW1 and WW2.

If the Sikhs had not formed the bulk of the India Corps in action during WW1, then the British lines would have had gaps in them. The Sikhs fought in the front and the Allies checked the Germans 40 miles away from the Ocean. Imagine what would have happened if the Germans had taken France AND Belgium, Britain would have been next.

In the Middle East, the Sikhs were vital to the defence of the Suez Canal, of Jerusalem and in Mesopotamia/iraq.

They foight because they were warriors, they fought for Britain because the alternatives were so dire. If it wasn't for the British, Sikh dharma which was at dire straights and constantly under threat from Brahmanism could have been absorbed into Hinduism – the threat is still real today.

This history should be celebrated and the strong British–Sikh links remembered. Sikhs have a global reputation in 2010 because of it.

You are right that the WWs were won by numerous groups however from India the Sikhs formed the largest group even though they were 2% of the population. I know it is painful but history is history and no amount of banning books or re-writing it will make it go away. As a Hindu woman I appreciate the contribution of Sikh men to save my sisters in history so lets face the truth…………

Kamaljit: I am not Sikh but I find your comments showing someone in deep denial. We Hindus should accept that we have learned from others. The British came to India and civilized it. They removed Sattee whereby Hindu women were required to kill themselves after they became widows, the Mughals contributed by adding to our arts and crafts, as well as sciences and the Sikhs have further taught us how to respect and defend women. India is full of hungry people, 85% are Hindu and look where that has left us. We are the laughing stock of the world due to Commonwealth games and corruption. The Olympic village has been built on the back of children and the poor…why should be blame the Sikhs, British and Muslims for what we have done to ourselves. Please grow up and see the truth, otherwise we will never move forward. Jai Hind!

Also Kamaljit I understand how you feel. As a Hindu man it must be very demoralizing to be continually told that history shows you to be inadequate but do not lose heart. You can learn from the Sikhs. Just open your heart and mind, and emulate them and you too will be like them. Do not let your history destroy your soul. You too can be a man with hard work and concentration. Bringing down others will not uplift you. You are my brother and I want you to find peace. Please meditate on OM and do phooja to find happiness and peace not hatred.

^ It'd be even more interesting Sukha, to know how you reached the age of adulthood without knowing anything interesting. Unfortunately, my 5 year old is at school at the moment so can't teach you it, but I have a free 5 mins so let me have a go. Two main reasons : First of all, the Sikhs had a choice to make. They made that choice in the interest of Sikhs. The choice was choosing the British or choosing their bitterest enemies….the people behind the rebellion / mutiny….the people who wanted to re-install the mughal throne in Delhi…i.e a collabaoration between the hated purbias and the hated mughals. It'd be really really interesting to learn how you managed to turn the computer on and log on to a sikh blog and yet expected the Sikhs to work towards restoring the mughal empire in Delhi.
The second reason is the way in which Sikhi flourished and was encouraged in the British Army. In the British Army, if a Sikh soldier dared take a pair of scissors and trim his hair or beard he was instantly dismissed from the army and sent home. As you will be able to see in old photographs of Sikhs in the British Army in places like Iraq, Palestine, France etc the Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji was given pride of place in every Sikh regiment. Contrast that with the state of Sikhs in the Indian army today. In 1984, that army even published guidelines for every soldier sent to Punjab to "look out for what are called 'amritdharis', because they are the enemies of the nation". In this Indian army, the Sikh is actively discouraged from becoming baptised and not trimming etc.

I presume Kamalshit Gupta, you're referring to the Persian King Nadir Shah's invasion. If so, I have 3 words for you : Libraries…..Persian books…..Translations of Persian books.
In fact, here's another word : Legs.
Use your legs to walk to the library and read what the Persian eyewitnesses and historians say what the Sikhs did when Nadir Shah passed through Punjab with the kidnapped Hindu women.
And now that we've finally got you in the library, while you're there why not find a book about Winston Churchill. This is what he said about the Sikhs in a message to the British people, in the British Parliament after the war :
"Those who know the Sikh history, know England's relationship with the Sikhs and are aware of the achievements of the Sikhs……."
"In the war, they fought and died for us, wearing the turbans…."

"…British people are highly indebted and obliged to Sikhs for a long time. I know that within this century we needed their help twice and they did help us very well. As a result of their timely help, we are today able to live with honour, dignity, and independence"

Manu (our founder) in Bhagatvida Gita says that Sudras, dogs and women are in the same category so you are only saying what is true in our religion however I expected you to be better than that! But you are a typical Hindu and you want to insult and destroy everyone to feel better about yourself.

To help raise yourself esteem here is my advice. Exercise and eat more protein powder. This will add bulk to your emaciated form. Use 'fair and lovely' bleaching cream and this will lighten a little bit your very dark skin. Also do not grease your hair so you do not smell. Do not eat pan but brush your teeth white and this will also help to control bad breath. Change your style of dressing but most important of all change your heart and mind. Love others. If you are very, very lucky you might even attract a ghori (you can learn bedroom tricks on the internet) otherwise go beyond caste and marry a Sudra woman who deserves to be loved. Think of bhagwan and do phooja. I will pray for you.

Churchill was referring to World War 1 and World War 2. As you are not a British Sikh you no doubt have no idea of the closeness and fondness that both white British and sikh British have for each other. A large proportion of us owe our very existence outside of the hell-hole that is India to the British Army and the opportunty it gave our great grandfathers to escape. I can, however, fully understand your reluctance to salute that relationship, or even to salute those people that thought so highly of the Sikhs. After all, they are the same people that consistently labelled your Hindu people as filthy, useless and bordering on pathetic. As such, I cannot imagine it would be a nice experience for you to see and hear them speak of Sikhs in such glowing terms. I've no doubt that when McCarrison did his dietry study and found the Sikhs to have the best diet in the world and Hindus to have the poorest it was a deliberate ploy to make Sikhs enlist in the army and fight the German hordes.
Obviously then, in the modern world, when the top medical researchers and universities in Britain conduct studies into height / strength etc, and come up with conclusions such as 'Sikh boys and girls are the tallest of all racial groups in the UK…..and Hindus are the smallest", there is no doubt that the descendants of the Raj have made a pact to infiltrate all top research posts and the British Medical Council whilst spending their weekends stiring up trouble on the Germany / Poland border trying to instigate another German invasion of Poland which will hopefully lead to another war in which they could again send in the Sikhs….who would willingly go because nice things have been said about them……..while making the hindus look silly.
Its all one big conspiracy against the Hindus I tell you. http://adc.bmj.com/content/71/3/207.abstract

"As for Churchill it is a politician giving a speech to make a section of people feel good about themselves, plus he was referring to the incidents of 1857"
    ———————————-
Churchill was referring to World War 1 and World War 2.

Kamaljit: I am reaching out to you from love and understanding however you are making it very difficult to get through to you. You have been brainwashed. You hate everyone, but most of all you hate yourself because you were born a Hindu, however do not make your soul have the same darkness as your skin…the solution is to embrace Islam, Christianity or Sikhism and you too will be saved.

"hitlers men also did studies like ur's they came up with the idea of aryan race being the supreme"

    1) Hitler also believed in uniformity of race and fascism and your RSS is spot on in idolizing Hitler by being a neo-fascist organization and practicing everything that Hitler stood for vis-a-vis Hindus and minorities in India. Its a well known fact how much popular "Mein Kampf" is in India so much so that IIM-A has a course on that, while at the same time its ban most of the world over.

"even sikh gurus were hindu's even the word guru is from sanskrit"

    2. Would you give me a proof showing that Hinduism was a religion when Gurus existed? Hinduism was never a religion back then. Hindu is a term coined with many theories behind it. One of them says it mean thief, dog etc. And most of the history taught in India is concocted and saffronised. I gave a link which you didn't respond to. A nobel laureate writes that how Hindus have reinvented the history to suit their purpose and sing songs of Hinduism and only Hinduism related to India.

I can go on and on to batter the lies and propaganda that Hindus have spread in India against eliminating the other minorities, however I will not.
