London Gurdwara Damaged by Fire

skih_temple_fire_415x275.jpgRecent news from East London is that Gurdwara Sikh Sangat has been substantially destroyed in an attempted arson attack.  An official statement of the Executive Committee of the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat states that,

On Monday the 16th March 2009 at approximately 1.30pm, whilst some women were attending a Satsang a male person unknown to the worshipers entered the Temple through a side entrance. One of the worshipers came from the main hall and confronted the intruder coming down from the top floor and inquired why he was in the building. He replied that he had come to meet someone and then ran out.

Shortly after a fire was discovered coming from the top floor Sachkhand room (this room is where the Guru Grant Shaibs/holy books are kept) within the Temple complex. [link]

Most of the gurdwara’s roof has collapsed and the community fears that all but one of the Granth’s kept inside the gurdwara have been destroyed.  The women who were in the gurdwara at the time were able to rescue one Granth from the flames, but unfortunately not the others.

“I can’t describe how important those holy books were to the Sikh community,” he added. Kulvinder Singh Virk, 26, who runs a local off-licence and is also a member of the temple, said: “This is very personal for us. It’s as if a member of our family has been burnt to death.” [link]

One worshipper said that in the past few weeks he had noticed racist graffiti on one of the gurdwara’s outer walls.

Some people say it's a scam. And blame politics, ie. gurdwara committee is to be blamed.

We need not to loose our temper, I know its easier said than done. And the culprits would be done for this horrendous act.

At present one of few thing we could do is take part in the chaupayee sahib being read by thousands.

Hi everyone, I work in east London and I could see the fire from my office window. Witnesses said that a black/mixed race man was seen running from the building. Although this episode is quite upsetting, it's still unusual for "outside" people to target Sikh gurdwaras. It seems that it's either a racist attack by a local man or it's an "inside job" as sometimes happen when gurdwara committee members start fighting with each other. I hope this is not true but time will tell if/when the police catch the arsonist and he talks.

    Hi Langar hall readers

Firstly, it is very sad to hear that this incident has occurred and especially that a Gurdwara – a holy place of worship where one should feel truly safe has been attacked.

However, i agree with an above comment and that people (esp our community) should not jump to any conclusions as to what happened. Anyone who sees this as an excuse to now target the black community or pakistani community in an act of vengence obviously does not know the meaning of being a Sikh.

Is it me though, or does it seem very strange that if this supposedly was an outside intruder how would he/she know where our holy books are kept and where to go to find them?? Also, why would they target the books? If this truly was an arson attack, wouldn't 'they' have just set fire to the gurdwara and been content with the destruction caused by that?

The truth will come out in time….
