Sikhs, Immortal Technique, and 1984

sikh_immortal_technique.jpg2009 marks the 25th year since the events of 1984.  Tragedy and the vibrancy of life mark the ‘story’ that is 1984 and beyond.  There will be many activities I assume over the next few months and I will do my best to stay informed and encourage participation by our readers, writers, and beyond.

Last year, I wrote that I was a HUGE fan of Immortal Technique.  Although some of the commenters could not move beyond his usage of profanity, I think they are losing out on a phenomenal activist and inspiration.  In that post I had mentioned his usage of a Sikh analogy, it seems next month he may be doing much more.  The Sikh Students Association at the University of Maryland, College Park is one of the groups playing host to an upcoming performance on March 6th, 2009 at 6pm.  The tagline of one of the posters (well one that I am sure the Sikh groups are promoting) is “Remembering 1984: 25 Years Since the Battle of Amritsar and the Sikh Genocide“.  For more information visit Tech’s myspace page that states that free admission will be limited to the first 500 people.

Another great initiative that was recently brought to my attention is the “One Million Chaupai Sahibs” project.  The target: 1,000,000 Chaupai Sahibs by June 2009.  Whether individually or collectively, I hope the TLH community actively supports the project.

On the initiative:

The Khalsa is the army of Vaheguru himself, and the Khalsa Saint-Soldiers were created to defend the innocent and weak against tyranny and oppression. The Khalsa was formed to be a force which could always be relied upon for help, people that would never turn anybody away, a house that was always open to the homeless and the wounded

However, today it seems we have lost our way and rather than helping others, we find ourselves knocking at different doors asking for justice and protection.  This is a small attempt to remind us that the only door we need to knock at, is that of the Guru.
The aim is to collectively complete 1,000,000 Chaupai Sahib paath’s in memory of the victims of the 1984 genocide, to pray for justice, and for the chardi khala of the Panth. This is our chance to unite across the globe, pray together and demonstrate our unity on this issue.

We cannot do this alone, we need our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers from around the world, to join in with us and complete this task. As individuals we can only achieve so much, but with the support of Gurbani and the Sangat, we can attain everything.

So let’s show our conviction and faith in Vaheguru and complete 1,000,000 Chaupai Sahib’s by 4 June 2009.[link]

Reason for the initiative:

Many of us will say that we have a passion for justice for the victims of 1984 and that we care about the Panth. However, in practical terms we often feel frustrated at not being able to do much to help. This paath will allow each one of us to make a daily contribution to the betterment of the Panth.  We are at a stage where simply attending one day events is not enough, we need to be working daily towards justice and living as true Khalsa’s. If we truly care, then taking out just a few minutes each day is a small contribution to make.

Who they are seeking:

  • Anyone who feels hurt by the atrocities we have suffered over the last 25 years.
  • Anyone who wishes to pray for the victims of the 1984 to present, Sikh genocide.
  • Anyone who feels that that the innocents who suffered at the hands of tyrants deserve justice.
  • Anyone who feels that they are part of the Sikh Nation and wish for the Nation to flourish.
  • Anyone who actually wants to make a difference.

So in essence, this should include each and every one of us. It doesn’t matter if you are a Sikh or a non-Sikh, whether you have taken Amrit or not, whether you keep your kesh or not, whether you belong to certain groups or not. This is our chance to gather as a community of human beings and do something together for the betterment of our mothers and fathers who have suffered beyond our worst nightmares.

I will be participating and encouraging others to do so.  Things change when we make it change.  Support concerts, support projects, get involved!

immortal technique has been clever to rap about this niche market- its a marketing stunt to get punjabis sikhs to buy his music and give him fame.

sikhs only find solutions to problems- not sing about them.

quite honestly, i do not care if any punjabis show up or not, this event is meant for the non punjabis, who are living under the false pretense of india being a victim of terrorism and not commiting any themselves

This is a great effort to bring about awareness and to practice our efforts as the Khalsa, in efforts to unite the world to fight against injustice.

But we must also remember to carry this message out to the world and challenge all injustice, not just those that are close to our hearts through kinship, friendship, or proximity. We must serve and protect justice against all forms of ethnic cleansing and marginalization of any peoples from all people.

We can't forget to protect our women from our men, our children from ourselves, the paanth from corruption in government and business and the faults of misdirected organized religion, and ourselves from not caring enough to manifest volition into action.

Our open arms should always be directed towards helping all people across the world: from America, to Sudan, to Darfur, to Palestine, to Pakistan, to India, to Russia, to China, and all the way around again. We must stand up and defend the oppressed from the everyday injustices we find from racism, to sexism, to homophobia, to violence, and disempowerment.

  9. Finding no alternative, forget and forgive is the only peaceful approach left for Sikhs and the idea is not bad to highlight their resentment against injustice and for the unity in face of helplessness and the injustice, criminality, corruption, dishonesty and selfishness prevailing in the spoiled system without any improvement in sight since 1984 though style of the inhuman policy stands changed.

The target: 1,000,000 Chaupai Sahibs by June 2009 for the peace of mind and or the unity of mankind especially Sikhs and for the purpose, provided like the freedom of expression without justice and welfare in face of and in the presence of brutal police force, military and other paramilitary forces, the project further should not serve more to the corrupt rulers than people in the system as existing in India.

    Respected Well Wishers,

Please try to visit and meet the victims personally and extend help within your sources/daswandh and also to encourage others to do so. It will provide some relief though they have been suffering for the last (25) years. Parbandhaks of the Gurduaras could also utilise their one month's Golucks for this noble cause – Sarbatt Daa Bhalaa.

With due respect to the Organizers of "One Million Chaupai Paaths", how it will help the victims or melt-down the killers? The said Chaupai is listed at Serial Nos. 377 to 401 or 405 mentioned at the end of Chariter No. 404 of the Chritropakhyan??

Have they ever read and understood Babur Baani enshrined in the Guru Granth Sahib at pages 360, 417, 418 and 722 (specifically.. "Koiee Mugal Naa Hoeaa Andhaa Kinaiy Naa Parchaa Laiyaa…") ???

    Let us avoid such gimmicks.

  13. Should Sikhs not learn a lesson from the past and now? Is it not proper to conclude in this manner?

After shedding and taking out Sikhs blood against each other, as Sikhs were used from within to prosecute Sikh community in the name to fight back against terrorism or otherwise.

Now, they voluntarily would be made, taught and forced to give blood, in the name of donating blood, in one of the biggest blood donation camps in the world, March 10 during the Hola Mohalla celebrations at the Sikh shrine of Keshgarh Sahib.

In the mega-blood donation camp, over 25,000 units of blood are being targeted for collection within 24 hours, is being organised jointly by the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Purakh ki Fauj (Army of the Almighty).

Similarly, Sikhs being preached to participate in the target of 1,000,000- "One Million Chaupai Paaths" by June 2009 and so on, non-issues for them in hand endlessly but not allowing them to attend issues of their importance like restoring their self-dignity and the justice to them for the excesses committed since 1984 or without touching the other issues relevant to Sikhs.

Only, the style of inhuman policy stands changed selectively especially singling out Sikhs in India and elsewhere.

    Isn’t?

  15. Pain of a Religious Personality who is burning in vain since long for ‘Charhdi Kala of Panth’ without disclosing much about him

Dear Advocate Balbir Singh Sooch, Sikh Vichar Manch, Punjab

Such manmade stories are regularly recited from the Stage of Gurduaras Sahib all over the world by Bhais, Raagis, Gyanies, Authors, Scholars and no one objects including custodians under the cover of SGPC/SAD and their goluck paid employees. In fact, socalled sant-babas have excelled in this respect especially from the days of late Sant Attar Singh, Sant Gurbachan Singh and Bhai Randhir Singh, etc.

By ignoring my short-comings, please have a look at another Attachment:

Why 1984 is the question we must discuss besides the Justice?

Sikhs who did so much for India ( as they should sinice it is their own country )still had to undergo 1984 is a mystery to me beside the pain of carnage ?

    I have an hypotheses .

I would however be happy to be proved wrong .

Sikhs in 1984 had forgotten the message of "GURU GRANTH SAHIB" of equality of all mankind.

They were at that point of time behaving like the Russian Tsars and French Rulers prior to revolution.

The shabby way they use to treat people from Bihar/Orissa/UP who use to do all the work Sikhs considered below their dignity

    1) Russian Revolution: – Russia resented the autocracy of Tsar Nicholas II ( Read Indians for Russians and Nicholas for SIKHS)

    2) French Revolution:- Conspicuous consumption of the noble class, especially the court of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette at Versailles, despite the financial burden on the French populace.( For French people read Indian people and for LouisXVI read SIKHS)

1984 can be easily understood by above events and highlight the important principle mankind yearns for that is “EQUALITY” as enshrined in “GURU GRANTH SAHIB”.

.Any violation of this equality leads to unfortunate but unavoidable event like 1984.

    Please prove me wrong .

    Harinder,

That has to be one of the most facile, asinine arguments ever made on The Langar Hall and Kaptaan has made many.

    You sound like Sharon Stone.

    Please try to follow:

You are committing a logical fallacy – post hoc ergo propter hoc. If event X comes after event Y, it is natural to suspect that Y caused X. But often that is a FALSE assumption. The world is far more complex and belief that somehow you understand 'divine retribution' is egotistical at best, megalomaniacal at worst. Such reductionism is rather useless.

You must propound a alternative explanation on why did 1984 happen?

"Mysteries" like answers are not enough.

For Sikhs as "Waheguru" is the "KARTAPURAKH" of all things in the Universe.

Therefore he as per me (a SIKH) is the doer of 1984 too.

As to why he did he do 1984 is some thing we will have to jointly decide on.

Certianly better and more intelligent people are there in my community and I am sure they will find a cause of 1984 rather than only crying about itor sweepingit under the carpet.

As for "post hoc ergo propter hoc ius" is not how I intend using above post .

I am rather trying to understand "WAHEGURUS " mind in terms of "Law of causality "

There have been many explanative models. From "political power" and Indira Gandhi's 'riding the tiger', to 'violence of the Green Revolution' to many more based on economics, politics, history, sociology, psychology, and many other of the humanities.

But here is the thing, there is no 'monocausal' answer. Nothing is so simplistic. We do NOT have to jointly decide on why 1984 occurred, we can learn many different lessons to progress as a community.

Harinder Veera, you will never understand the 'Law of Causality' and to believe you can, is egotistical in the extreme. Even Sacha Patshah Guru Nanak, could only say 'Hukam Rajai Chalna, Nanak Likhia Naal'. To believe you understand some divine logic is superstitious, callous, and displays extreme hubris.

  29. It is law of nature-God-Lord or of the sanity-wit-truth; though the meanings of words vary from individual to individual and situation to situation under the changed circumstances and that is directly proportional to individual’s wits-truth. But, it is specifically, man made to understand that even only wits (without truth-falsehood) do not go with him, meaning thereby, not even wit can hide him or his misdeeds-falsehood in the Lord’s court. That’s why the judge is/was addressed as ‘My Lord’ even in India.

There is always action and reaction and it goes on multiplying. Whether the nature’s (Lord’s) role to be taken as finally operative and the supreme or of that sanity-wits-truth? Or should the misuse of sanity-wit (falsehood and cheating) be discussed first, before concluding that so and so acts like happenings of 1984 were in hand of nature (God) nothing else (By obeying, O Nanak! the pre-ordained order of the Lord of will)?

We should not forget that presently ‘Sikh religion’ is being considered as a base and connected with the important factors of the ‘unity’ and ‘minority’ for the survival of Sikhs in India and outside which goes against majority communal vote bank politically and ideologically religiously. And, for the reasons, Sikhs were attacked physically and their religion was / is also being attacked ideologically from different angles and by different means (may be proving like double edged weapon to weaken Sikhs and otherwise) for the appeasement of the majority. Here, Lord’s (God) will also matter.

In the present political scenario, the role of Sikhs is not one sided that the Khalsa is the army of Vaheguru himself, and the Khalsa Saint-Soldiers were created to defend the innocent and weak against tyranny and oppression and for his own sufferings Khalsa to be satisfied always with only ‘by obeying, O Nanak! The pre-ordained order of the Lord of wills i.e. ‘Hukam Rajai Chalna, Nanak Likhia Naal’. Nanak never also meant so.

The Khalsa has to be simple and moderate with balanced participation in behaviour religiously and politically, using its sanity-wit-truth first, then in case any timely helplessness (not defeat) before the tyranny or the failure after right use of the sanity-wit-truth, he must and has to remain satisfied ‘by obeying, O Nanak! The pre-ordained order of the Lord of wills i.e. ‘Hukam Rajai Chalna, Nanak Likhia Naal’.

The system is created and meant for moderate balanced participation in behaviour religiously and politically with proper use of the sanity-wit-truth.

    Genocide And Generation Transformation

    By Balbir Singh Sooch*

    Oh! Genocide and Generation Transformation;

What are you murmuring? Where, how and by whom?

Of minorities including Sikhs in India! Yes

Through the so-called Babas-Saints and their henchmen!!!

You mean to say in the name of Dharma Gurus! Yes

    Who planned and when?

The central agencies entered through Sant Bhindranwale-Taksal

Jarnail Sant Bhindranwale was too late to understand in Punjab

    Then what happened? Sacrificed

But genocide and generation transformation continued

    It was declared long back as a part of the policy;

What policy? National Policy and Strategy

To destroy, crush, eliminate and defeat the warriors

To commit sexual assault and humiliate men and women

Through the selected forces and the terrorists

And use the promoters, greedy and to get the field vacated

Oh! What a cruel and inhuman policy!!!

How? By keeping them under fear and shadow of death always

Create atmosphere to forget their real spirit of Dharma

Now the presence of surrendered, puppets, cats

And the so-called Babas-Saints and their henchmen

Could be felt and seen almost in every home affected

Is it the fate of Sikh Nation in India? Yes

What do you ask about ground realities in India?

The similar humans from all over are ready elsewhere

    The Indian Nationalists! Really

As terrorized terrorists and humiliated ones in India and abroad

What for! To terrorize the whole World

    Oh silly! The terrorist’s human flush may strike any time;

You mean to say the humiliated minority’s warriors

Would act as nationalists globally aided by India

Yes! The terrorists’ flush meant against the most advanced technology

Oh yes! The World would be late to understand to act!!!

Oh! It would be more dangerous ‘Global Terrorism’ to conquer the World

  32. Global Tterrorism’
    Genocide And Generation Transformation
    By Balbir Singh Sooch*

    Oh! Genocide and Generation Transformation;
What are you murmuring? Where, how and by whom?
Of minorities including Sikhs in India! Yes

Through the so-called Babas-Saints and their henchmen!!!
You mean to say in the name of Dharma Gurus! Yes

    Who planned and when?
The central agencies entered through Sant Bhindranwale-Taksal
Jarnail Sant Bhindranwale was too late to understand in Punjab

    Then what happened? Sacrificed
But genocide and generation transformation continued

    It was declared long back as a part of the policy;
What policy? National Policy and Strategy
To destroy, crush, eliminate and defeat the warriors
To commit sexual assault and humiliate men and women
Through the selected forces and the terrorists
And use the promoters, greedy and to get the field vacated
Oh! What a cruel and inhuman policy!!!

How? By keeping them under fear and shadow of death always
Create atmosphere to forget their real spirit of Dharma

Now the presence of surrendered, puppets, cats
And the so-called Babas-Saints and their henchmen
Could be felt and seen almost in every home affected
Is it the fate of Sikh Nation in India? Yes

What do you ask about ground realities in India?
The similar humans from all over are ready elsewhere
    The Indian Nationalists! Really
As terrorized terrorists and humiliated ones in India and abroad
What for! To terrorize the whole World

    Oh silly! The terrorist’s human flush may strike any time;
You mean to say the humiliated minority’s warriors
Would act as nationalists globally aided by India

Yes! The terrorists’ flush meant against the most advanced technology
Oh yes! The World would be late to understand to act!!!
Oh! It would be more dangerous ‘Global Terrorism’ to conquer the World

  35. Respected all,

Indian press does know that “Only freedom of expression without justice and welfare, in face of and in the presence of brutal police force, military and other paramilitary forces, serves always more to corrupt ruler than people in the system as existing in our country" that’s by government of India is sparing me so far otherwise there is no freedom of expression in India and the press is controlled and privileged to harm or defame any individual/family which must suite to the government of the day irrespective of any party etc.

Please stress and emphasize more that the Sikhi’s survival should not be left as a token of identity only with Sikhs belonging to Dhande Di Sikhi (those who become Sikhs for commercial motives) and Bhekh Di Sikhi (those who accept Sikhism formally to imitate Sikhs for material gains and to exploit Sikhism for their ignoble ends) in connivance with SGPC/RSS/BJP/Congress fraudulently as it looks today within and abroad?

  37. THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA IS REQUESTED-PLEASE FORWARD

The government of India is requested that Sikhs belonging to Dhande Di Sikhi (those who become Sikhs for commercial motives) and Bhekh Di Sikhi (those who accept Sikhism formally to imitate Sikhs for material gains and to exploit Sikhism for their ignoble ends) involved must be made and directed to stop playing with Sikhs sentiments in general and against Sikhs in particular and specifically.

    Or

Would the Sikhs belonging to Dhande Di Sikhi and Bhekh Di Sikhi themselves stop?

  39. Sikh affairs-Related issue:

Should the whole world not know as to how the Defence Minister AK Antony tell a “white lie” in Parliament on February 18, 2009

    1. Should the whole world not know as to how the Defence Minister AK Antony tell a “white lie” in Parliament on February 18, 2009 that the SGPC had given certification to the Central government that it (SGPC) did not want to pursue the case of the Sikh Reference Library anymore and earlier also the then Defence Minister George Fernandes gave conflicting statements of complicated the matter?

    2. Was then the CBI took the rare manuscripts/books or articles to the local youth hostel in gunny bags and trunks after the Army attack on Sri Akal Takhat Sahib in June 1984 not an issue when SAD (Badal) sharing power in the centre with NDA mainly BJP?

    3. Did the issue of taking the rare manuscripts/books or articles to the local youth hostel in gunny bags come to the knowledge only after the disclosure of retired CBI inspector Ranjit Singh Nanda or has he made some additions to it now?

    4. Had the “white lie” of Defence Minister AK Antony that the representative of the SGPC given certification to the Central government that it (SGPC) did not want to pursue the case of the Sikh Reference Library anymore and the denial, by the SGPC president Avtar Singh of the same, to be taken and be considered as a thoughtfully and conspiringly projected the Sikh issue by the politicians before the coming Lok Sabha Elections-2009 as usual?

    5. I think, the SGPC president Avtar Singh will honour the retired CBI inspector Ranjit Singh Nanda before the elections and thereafter, the claims of the SGPC that 10,500 books and 500 original manuscripts were still in possession of the CBI or the Central government would end as dead till some other elections. Isn’t?

  41. Dear Balbir Singh Sooch-Sikh Vichar Manch –

I will admit, I haven't read everything you have written here, and I simply must coment on one of your first statements.

"Finding no alternative, forget and forgive is the only peaceful approach left for Sikhs…"

I speak as a survivor – my chardi kala will not permit me to think of myself of a victim – of both the Bluestar Massacre time in Amritsar and the Delhi Pogrom, where both my husband and son were killed along with various family members and my two preborn daughters. I hope someday to be spiritually advanced enough to forgive, but forget – NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!

    Mai-Harinder Kaur Ji,

    Fateh!

In view of your unbearable dreadful scene and pain as narrated above, please do pardon me if my comments hurt your feelings in any manner. I fully agree with you. Nobody can be so spiritual but, finally to console ourselves, we have to surrender before HIS will. A common man, normally, feels helpless in face of the injustice and the cruel system except persons like me only can write but nothing else as I did painfully so far.

  45. @ Lee

You may be right but after all it's spreading the word and non-sikhs are getting it that Sikhs are not terrorists (as many non-sikhs think after 9/11) but are hit by it and hit in a very hard way.

The Chaupai Sahib event is a great way. This is also true that only prayers will not do, we have to act also. 'God help those who help themselves.)

  47. Balbir Singh Sooch ji,

My deeply held belief that whatever happens is the Hukam of Vaheguru has sustained me. I admit, I don't understand, but Vaheguru needs neither my consent nor my understanding.

Thank you for answering me. I appreciate that.

Let me add that I am very proud of all of us. Eight achieved shaheedi fighting as Sikh/Khalsa sant-sipahis; three survived to tell the story. Links to our stories can be found near the top of the right sidebar of my/our blog, The Road To Khalistan Whether you read our stories or others, please be sure you are educated about what really happened, not the lies perpetrated by the government of India.

I also highly recommend the series "1984 and I" on Sikhchic.

This is our history, our legacy. We must learn it from those who lived it.

I just new that some riots happenned in 1984, until I read all about 1984 Genocide on sikhchic and Road to Khalistan, I wonder how the survivors are living.. passing on each second after losing their loved ones, Can't imagine their pain and suffering. After reading through various forums and websites about 1984 massacre, i am surprised how this KOUM is sitting so quietly after 24 years of the inhuman killings, torture and humiliation to even women and children. Why do I see 90% of the youth of this KOUM just dancing to the tunes of JAZZY-B??? Seems like the Youth is asleem .. why doesnt it wake up to see whats happening around or is it that nobody bothers to care to know or dont want to get involved in the struggle??
