True Saint, Fearless Soldier: Bhai Taru Singh

bhaitarusingh.jpgFor those of you who enjoyed Vismaad Productions’ work with Sahibzadey, Rise of the Khalsa and Sundri, there is now a new animated movie to look forward to this fall.  Bhai Taru Singh: True Saint. Fearless Soldier, is the latest production and will be premiering around the world over the next few months.  The film’s website provides a description of the film,

The story of Bhai Taru Singh is one of a true saint soldier who lived during an extremely difficult period for the Sikhs. The mughal rulers of the time were brutal towards all citizens, and especially the Sikhs. Bhai Taru Singh Ji bravely stood up to the regime which earned him the respect of all Hindus and Muslims from the surrounding villages. [link]

Many may be familiar with Bhai Taru Singh’s saakhi:  Bhai Taru Singh Ji and his sister were arrested for providing meals to the underground Sikhs. The residents of Lahore secured the release of the sister by making a payment on one lac rupees. But the brother insisted that he would rather sacrifice himself then seek pardon. Zakaria Khan ordered that this hair be removed along with the skull. Bhai Taru quietly recited the holy hymns when his skull was being chopped off.

This movie will be a great way to learn and remember Bhai Taru Singh, particularly for the younger Sikh generation. The movie includes inspirational Vaars by Tigerstyle, Shabad Kirtan by Bhai Satwinder Singh Raagi and songs by Jaspinder Narula.  The website hasn’t been updated with a trailer yet but you can refer to the site for upcoming screening dates.

If knowing is believing, seeing is happening.

I'm beginning to understand how Jesus of Nazareth came to look like Jesus of Laguna Beach.

Next thing you know Sikhism will have started in New Mexico, instead of the Panj Piyaare, we'll have the Panj dudes.

In the future Banda Singh Bahadur will raise up his sword and proclaim "I have the power", and a scared horse will become his trusty stead, War Horse.

Since we're giving up our whole image and Faith, can Ken and Barbie at least become Kiran and Bhabee.

Just a simple humble shallow brown request.

    mightywhite –

First off, props for referencing my favorite cartoon as a child – He-Man. Well, it was a two-way tie between He-Man and Transformers, but that's beside the point.

Props out of the way – what?!

Are you saying Bhai Taru Singh looks too pale in the cartoon? Is there something too "white" about his features?

    I thought he looked alright.

Even given that a lot of Punjabis are darker than how Bhai Taru Singh is portrayed, there's a whole bunch who are very fair as well. Heck, I've got an uncle with red hair, green eyes, fair skin – you'd think he was Irish…if it wasn't for the big turban and thick accent.

    What gives bro?

  8. mightywhite says:

I've seen Sikhs from Punjab that look as you describe but they arent the rule but more the exception.

In all the animation vids from this studio the characters look this way, the characters are very pale.

This was brought up before with the Sundri animation.

I guess no one took note. And they dont have too.

Perhaps we should all get our skin bleached that way we more resemble the real life virtuous punjabi Sikh based characters.

    No.

If this was disney doing this, we would all be pointing out the obvious and how we need Sikhs from our community to represent.

So why not speak up when one of our own exhibits self hate.

  11. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa; Waheguru ji ki Fateh

dear mightywhite first of all there is not an iota of self-hate. Sundri was depicted the way because she was supposed to be fair and beautiful as per novel on which the story was based. and i guess this was discussed in detail on many forums. why you are not still convinced is beyond my comprehension. and yes we listen to constructive criticism and try to learn from our mistakes.

The only images released on the website are loud and clear about Bhai Taru Singh ji's wheatish complexion: the skin color of majority of punjabis. I would have appreciated if you had waited for sometime and haven't jumped the gun from your observation based on just one image.

Thank you for keep us on tenterhooks it really pushes us to improve our work.

    Sukhwinder Singh,

I saw the posters you had for the other works, and It seems like the color palette being used is made up solely of cows milk.

As we know afghans, turks, and other invaders are very very light complected, in fact more so than the average person in Pakistan or Punjab of today.

Yet in Sundari the characters shown to be chasing her were rather brown, perhaps it’s a different grain of wheat the bad guys ate, but their variety is very similar to what Punjabi Sikhs must be eating today.

I’ve noticed in Punjab everyone is into gora, gora, gori.

However ironically for those of us that have spent ample time in the west that gets old quick or altogether overlooked, diversity and respect of your heritage is key here, and what you will notice is………

Brown Punjabi Sikh girls are In.

The last thing we need are Faith oriented videos telling them that they need to lighten up.

For if they can’t lighten up now, I’m sure as they come into womanhood they can find a way for their future children to look white and I doubt most of those children will ever grow up watching your videos.

Either we can recognize to make the coming change, or the coming change can make us unrecognizable even to our selves.

P.Singh – He-Man and Transformers, definitely classics. Voltron was up there too.

Mightywhite – great and pertinent critique. Point well-taken.

Sundri was depicted the way because she was supposed to be fair and beautiful as per novel on which the story was based. and i guess this was discussed in detail on many forums.

Notice how the words 'fair and beautiful' are somehow always paired together. Mightywhite is questioning this and it should be questioned.
