UPDATE: Who is this Child?

In an interesting twist an Indian Bihari family is claiming that the 9-years-old Gurrinder isSingh360_307115a.jpg really their kidnapped son 6-years-old Shintu Kumar, who was kidnapped on March 3rd of this year.

The mother has stated:

“We saw his photo too [on TV]… I know my child.”

The Bihari police have stated that a DNA test will need to be conducted before proceeding further. The family was able to move immediately as the mother is related to a prominent Bihari legislator. Officials in England have been notified. Our thoughts are with the child and hope that he is being taken care of and that he may be reunited with his proper family soon. More as it become available….

—————————————————————————————

Although there may be more pressing global news, especially as the morning newspapers report about the 4,000th death of an American soldier, along with the soon approaching 90,000 projected Iraqi civilian deaths, in the last six years in Iraq, I start the week with a question that is being asked by the Sikh community in Southall (London, UK). Who is this child?

A number of papers have reported about the discovery of nine year old Gurrinder Singh, a young boy that seemed to have been lost or left at a bus-stop by his gora uncle. The community and the police seem baffled:

“Something like this has never happened here before and I’ve lived here 48 years,” Mr Gill said. The temple is putting up pictures asking if anyone knows Gurrinder.

Rax Subhardan, 32, who works at an electronics store near the health centre, said: “If you lived here you would be shocked too. The Punjabi community is quite close-knit. How can someone just abandon a kid?”

However over and over in the press has been the subject of human trafficking. While by all means the police should explore all possibilities in understanding how Gurrinder ended up where he did, I am at a loss why child trafficking should be assumed? Can any of our readers shed some light on incidences of child trafficking possibly from Punjab to the UK?

  1. It could be that his gora uncle is infact just a fair skinned desi uncle. If I was a gora I wouldn't go through the hassel of washing his hair everyday for three years and instead get it cut.

My guess is that his parents were probably here illegally. They knew they were about to get caught and sent back so they thought that for the childs sake to have him sent to social services in the hope that he will eventually get adopted.

Also, due to his age I'm not sure if he can distinguish with accuracy how long a year is and how long a month is. It could be that he arrived quite recently.

Child trafficking could always be a reason and should not be ruled out merely on the basis that: 'oh, it's never happened before!'.

Just my $0.2 on this case.

I find the abandonment of this boy to be very sad and also very bizzare. There are so many questions – if he was living in England for three years, why was he never put in school? Who is this white "uncle" that he refers to? I think the question of trafficking was probably raised because of the circumstances – the fact that he doesn't speak English and speaks of this mysterious uncle… One would hope that he isn't a victim of trafficking and perhaps if and (hopefully) when individuals come forward with more information, they can rule that possibility out.

Last year, there was a film made about illegal migration/trafficking from Punjab to the UK called Shores Far Away (Door Kinare) which i'm sure would speak to this issue that you raise…

I'm a bit perplexed by the child trafficking suggestion. Never heard of that before. There's probably some illegal immigration rackets, but specifically child trafficking? Doesn't make any sense.

I am sure I am going to regret this, but Mr. Harinder, what is the M theory and does it have anything to do with Gurrinder?

I am a punjabi sikh. My sister and I were naturally shocked and appalled (my mother was heartbroken) after learning about Gurrinder on the local news. We were hoping that all the professionals involved in Gurrinder's case were taking good care of him and our concerns lead to finding this blog.

At first we assumed that his family had sent him here illegally and an arrangement for his stay somehow fell apart (altho even that is hard to believe). However we have been thinking with heads of more affluent sikhs..perhaps the poorer sikhs in india would just let their child go, even sell a child, even a boy? hard to believe for us but maybe a reality?

A white uncle certainly would not have bothered with his guti and would have only comunicated to him in English, Gurrinder doesnt speak any English- there is no white uncle –

Gurrinder has come with a made up story which he has been forced to tell out of fear – it was reported that he was 'scared'

Question is – who told him to tell this story?

If Gurrinder was kidnapped as his alleged parents say he was and his kidnappers had been caught already by indian police as i understand it – why were the indian police at the time not able to locate Gurrinder earlier- doesnt add up.

Sad thing is tho that Gurrinder is now in the hands of social services and foster care. I dont know how many sikhs families are foster parents not many i should think perhaps amongst many issues, this raises the issue of fostering?

    Warrior of Light,

Thank you for your insight and opinions. Your various hypothesis may be probably. It is definitely a sad case. To follow up on my earlier question about child trafficking, I found this link about the case and child trafficking in Bihar:

    TRADING IN HUMANITY

THE eastern state of Bihar is one of India's poorest, and high unemployment levels force many people to migrate to large urban areas such as Delhi and Mumbai for low-paid work on building sites and in factories.

According to the charity Save the Children, large numbers of children are trafficked from the state every year. Sometimes, poor families will sell their children to traffickers; sometimes they are abducted. Well-organised networks sell the children as domestic workers and to sweat shops making clothes for export. They are also offered for adoption and sexual exploitation.

Statistics are difficult to obtain because many of the children are trafficked through informal family networks. It is thought about 10 per cent of them end up abroad.

All posts have stopped on this vital question.

Now you have no clue of this who this boy is nor does your police or your society.

Every one is thinking in a stereotype manner of illegal child trafficing.

I may have come up with a audacious and a strange hypothesies explaining his origin.

May be it is wrong!( not that I believe so )

But so are you wrong till you find the answer to who this child is ?

My hypotheses stands til then in competition to any other hypotheses.

To repeat the hypotheseis again not to offend you or any one else including Sardar MEEWA SINGH so as to keep the question alive :-
