Stephen Harper Visits Harmandir Sahib
Many politicians in America and Canada appeal to their Sikh constituents by visiting local Gurdwaras. Sometimes these visits include a brief speech and other times just a saroopa. Regardless, it’s usually an ask for votes.
What I particularly find powerful about Canadian politicians is that they will walk along side their Sikh constituency during Nagar Kirtans and visit the Harmandir Sahib. To me that is representative of the political power the Sikh community has in Canada. Politicians are not only appearing to give a “vote for me” speech or state a “thank you” for the saropoa. They need to do more to get the Sikh vote.
Sam Grewal of the Toronto Star writes:
“The Liberal party took us for granted and is now paying the price,” Gill says. “It would be a mistake for the Conservatives to think that simply appearing at functions is enough to win votes.”
An appearance by the Prime Minister, at the place most revered by Sikhs, may be the exception.
Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister of Canada visited the Harmandir Sahib this past Wednesday.
“For Harper to go to the Golden Temple, the party is saying to Sikhs here, `We’re very conscious of you, of your religious and cultural identity.”
Now I am just waiting for Obama to visit the Harmandir Sahib!

DSB & BigSinghSlim-I am so sorry for incorrectly posting the wrong Canadian Prime Minister's name. Thank you for catching my mistake. I have corrected it in my post to Stephen Harper. Apparently, I used the first name of a previous Canadian Prime Minister (Paul Martin) and the last name of the current Prime Minister. Once again, my apologies. I should be more thorough.

With many sikhs in his own political party and others pulling his coat tail to get a "seat" he was "advised" to do this by them to gain votes considering the huge number of sikh-canadian citizens in Canada.
At the same time though love the country – Hate when politicians play on factors close to peoples heart such a religion when ALL religions are about truth but how many politicians are about it ? Kind of Ironic
BTW – He refused the PRASHAD on this visit ! Now people are obviously upset.
His chumchay should have told him as easy as they could win sikh voters. Its also that easy to loose them by offending the one thing most important to them.

Who cares if he didn't have the prashad? I don't. The man got in trouble earlier for accepting a wafer at a Catholic funeral, so maybe he was just scared that something like wafer gate could happen again. Maybe the wafer gate affair made him have memories that took away his desire to eat anything during this visit. He donated money for Deg and was quite respectful. There are always some critics. Personally, I don't like him all that much, but why slam him for not taking Prashad when he is from another religion? I have a family member who won't take prashad from most Gurdwaras in the world even though he is an Amritdhari.

I visited the Golden Temple on 26th October 2010 with my wife and had Guru Ka Langar. It was a unique and marvelous experience to see how smoothly hundreds of devotees are served hot meals together………..faith in the Guru can create miracles.
