Metrosexual Murdabad!

While I had contemplated covering some serious news, scouring through Google News, an article caught my attention. Today happens to be the 33rd birthday of David Beckham. Not that I really care, but the article shahrukh.jpgbemoans how David lost his star status over the past few years:

From 2003 to 2004, Google ranked his as the most popular sportsman in the world, by virtue of the number of times his name had been logged in. But in 2008, David Beckham’s popularity has been confined to reports of his luncheons with his wife, Victoria, and her famous girlfriends — Eva Langoria and Katie Holmes. [link]

The article theorizes that Beckham had gotten too large for life. I had my own theory….since Beckham had always been labeled as the “poster boy” for metrosexuals, maybe we finally got sick of him. Maybe, after a decade of this god-awful trend, we have returned to normalcy and are in the post-metrosexual age. Eager to test my hypothesis I devised the full-proof experiment — I would look up the word “metrosexual” in Google News.

As far as my hypothesis goes, I WAS WRONG!

The new James Bond, Daniel Craig, is being labeled as the first ‘metrosexual Bond.’ (What next a metrosexual Clint Eastwood?) In fact a French company is asking: Are you man enough to wear makeup?

But French designer and Eurotrash presenter Jean Paul Gaultier thinks that men are just being shy, and has just launched a range of skincare products – including makeup – for blokes. [link]

Now I have heard of desi guys that get their eyebrows done, guys that get facials, guys that get pedicures and manicures, and even guys that use fair and handsome (hahaha, that is just too funny!). Hopefully women notice, because I sure don’t.

I am firmly in the camp that men should be manly men. Punjabi cultural ethos, sort of, plays upon this conception of masculinity, as well. All Punjabi Sikh men (turbaned or non-turbaned) used to grow some facial hair. But now I find most Punjabi Sikh men (turbaned or non-turbaned) as part of the metrosexual wave. So on this brainless Friday I ask the guys where do you stand? And the women where do you wish they stood?

What’s Shahrukh Khan saying with that finger? “I told you not to go outside! ……Don’t worry, you can still be white. I mean fair.”

Are you implying that metrosexuals can’t be manly men? :) I think there are some self-proclaimed metrosexuals who also like to think of themselves as “manly men”.

As far as what’s better- it doesn’t matter! as long as you’re comfortable with it. If you’re comfortable with your metrosexuality- cool. If you’re comfortable with your manly-man-ness, cool.

And I bet Punjabi cultural ethos more than just “sort of” plays into your conception of manliness… I bet it hikes it up about 10 notches.

Damn Jodha – I never thought of Daniel Craig as metrosexual. Next to Sean O'Connery, Craig struck me as one of the roughest, toughest guys to play the role of Bond. Don't kill it for me – a metrosexual Bond? That ain't right.

On the topic of hair, Craig could be shaving his chest, but he's not – as I understand it, 'shaving of the chest' is a clear indicator a dude is metrosexual.

As for me, I don't think I fall under the metrosexual category, and there's definitely the Punjabi in me, that thinks guys should be guys – hairy chests and all.

That said, I have some measure of my pop's genes, who is a hairless wonder (it's like he's prepping for a swim meet)and I never really had to consider body hair; my beard provided me with enough to consider (tie up or leave down, gel or hairspray, tahthi or no tahthi). As such, I never felt the kind of social pressure many Punjabi friends of mine feel, to shave or trim their chests, to get rid of any back hair etc. Reminds me of a visit to cousins out east. One of them had his eyebrows done pretty skinny. Poor guy spent an entire evening getting roasted by an uncle, and to top it off, his sister's friend walked into the room, and exclaimed "OMG, your eyebrows are prettier than mine!" :)

The pressure to do these things, stems from what guys think girls find attractive – shaggy chests, back, eyebrows etc. are apparently not sexy at the moment.

I think the metrosexual trend is here to stay…until girls decide it is no longer attractive. I think some girls are smugly enjoying seeing guys bend over backwards with their grooming – finally a little equivalence for all their years of waxing and plucking.

I think the whole hairless & skin thing is going way too far. I guess people have too much time on their hands or too much money so they have nothing better to think about.

Whether you're a guy or a girl, it just sucks. I do my eyebrows and stuff and wear makeup here and there, but sometimes I just can't be bothered. And to see guys take out the time to do things like those when there isn't as much pressure, that just gets to me.

I agree the trend is here to stay, but I think people are going to get fed up w/ it. I already am, and now I'm starting to see one of the reasons why you're not supposed to cut your hair in Sikhi.

    So from a female prospective

    – don't shave just because everyone else is doing it. Most punjabi guys look better w/ facial hair than w/o it.

-Face lightener would be a killer, it's bad enough for women, men don't need to go that route. Please, keep your tan.

-No makeup except eyeliner – and that's only if you're starring in Pirates of the Caribbean.

-If you're gonna pluck ur eyebrows, shave your chest & so forth for a girl to like you, then she's probably not worth the trouble, find someone who looks beyond those things.

Reema: Yes I am implying that metrosexuals cannot be manly men! I am sure while they are getting a pedicure they sing this song

P.Singh: Haha, I don't know enough about Daniel Craig. The media is labeling him as the 'metrosexual Bond,' so I just went with it. He definitely is no Sean Connery.

KPrincess: I sure hope it isn't hear to stay! I am waiting for the pendulum to swing back. Then this self-described 'scrub' will be normal again.

Maybe the fact that I'm from California's central valley has something to do with it, but men should be manly men. No facials, no pedicures, no manicures, no "fair and handsome" (so gay), no highlights, no eye brows plucked, none of that. If a guy has a talk about manicures or pedicures with me, I want to throw up.

I have nothing against clean guys, that’s fine showers are essential and so is deodorant and all other acceptable hygiene for males. But if a guy has to go get his nails cleaned from the same lady I go to, lines have been crossed and he has gone to the point of no return.

    P. Singh – I can understand what your saying about guys trying to do what girls think is sexy. But sometimes sexy is an attitude which comes off in an appearance. If that makes any sense! I mean he could be in a t-shirt and jeans and if his attitude screams confidence indicating he is more than just comfortable in his skin, that’s sexy. A guy that can say no to a girl demanding he wear a pink striped dress shirt because that’s not his style, that’s even better.

  12. Nicole says:

Oh yeah…. There is this song that reminds me of how guys used to be and in many ways should be lol it’s called "I'm still a guy" by Brad Paisley. It describes guys the way they used to be in a great way so listen to it if you guys get the chance. It's country, but give it a chance anyways. In his words, "I don't highlight my hair, I've still got a pair, yeah hunnie I'm still a guy"…. haha perfect!

Daniel Craig is no metrosexual. He's the meanest and toughest Bond ever, more in keeping with the original 007 as envisaged by Ian Fleming in his book.

    Hey Nicole –

You're preaching to the choir :) What you've said makes complete sense. And I agree with the comment re confidence – too many girls have made the same general comment about confidence being attractive for it to be coincidence.

I guess what I was trying to say was, a lot of guys now feel the same societal pressure to wax, and pluck, and shave etc. that most girls have felt for years.

Too funny – I do have a pink striped dress shirt but there was no girl pressure involved at all. I went to the store, tried on the shirt, I had my doubts but the salesgirl said it looked hot….oh [Removed By Admin Kaur: Using swear words is strictly prohibited on The Langar Hall]
