“2008 Presidential Elections Voter Guide For Sikh Americans” Available For Our Local Sangats

As an UPDATE to my post a couple weeks ago, the Sikh Coalition has released the “2008 Presidential Elections Voter Guide For Sikh Americans”. P.S. McCain never responded … the guide contains some of his answers collected from outside resources (the Coalition became our #1 research assistant)!

According to the Sikh Coalition:

sikhvote.jpgOur candidate questionnaire was provided to both the major party candidates in November 2007. Since then, the Sikh Coalition has provided all candidates multiple and repeated opportunities to answer its questionnaire. Our Voter Guide reflects the answers of the candidates who responded to our questionnaire.

The Sikh Coalition’s Sikh American Voter Guide includes information about how and where to vote on Election Day, summaries of proposed laws that affect Sikh interests, and the presidential candidates’ answers to our questionnaire. Of the 13 candidates running for president of the United States, a total of five responded to the Coalition’s questionnaire – including one of the two major party candidates.

The 25-page guide-book has a brief biographical section on all 13 candidates running for President, along with pictures (Prabhu Singh Khasla … Ralph Nader is represented)!  In addition, responses from the candidates on questions addressing:
1)    Relationship With Sikhs
2)    Hate Crimes
3)    Religious Profiling
4)    Employment Discrimination
5)    Discrimination
6)    Asylum
7)    Immigration

Check it out!  Let’s us know what you think!  Make copies and get them out to your sangats at local Gurdwaras before next Tuesday!

Vote On Tuesday (11/04/2008)!  You can find your local polling place through Google here!

This is great. Thanks to the Sikh Coalition for spending the time to put this together. It speaks volumes that Obama is making a concerted effort to reach out to the Sikh community in America. Obama may not have written those responses himself, but it’s great to see where he stands on these issues.

However, the most amusing part of the reader was the responses of our friend Gene Amondson of the Prohibition party. This was his exact answer to the question, “What is your position on the End Racial Profiling Act (HR 3847/S. 2132)?”

“We have to profile, take off the hat if you do not want it….but my friends tell me how to know a Sikhs, I am glad, because I think you are good people.”

I’m sure there are many ways to dissect this statement. Anyway, I’m glad to see organizations like the Sikh Coalition ready to address mindsets such as this.

  2. Singh says:

Wow the only real candidate they have is Obama. Is this an Obama supporting document? If so Sikh Coalition has some IRS problems being that they are a “non-profit”.

  3. Ashveer says:

Singh, did you read the premise of the document?

“We began this process by sending each of the presidential candidates a questionnaire,
that asked about their stances on issues we considered to be particularly important to Sikhs.
These are: Hate Crimes, Religious Profiling, Employment Discrimination, Discrimination, Asylum
and Immigration. This guide reflects the answers we received, as well as additional research on
their positions. All presidential candidates were given the opportunity to respond.”

The other candidates either did not respond in any capacity or did so minimally. There is considerable space given to the socialist candidate even though his response did not fit the parameters that the coalition was working in.

Ashveer, facts have no place where opinions are involved!

On a side note, was there a process to arriving at the 7 areas of questions? The reason I ask is at first view they appear to come across as the entire Sikh experience in North America to be those things. What about our hopes and dreams? Bhul chuk maaf :)

  5. Gene Amondson’s responses run the gamut from unintelligible to hilariously bizarre. He’s definitely got my vote. For those still undecided, consider this: he’s the only candidate to have been interviewed by the man who should be President, Ed Helms.

  6. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Presidential Candidate and TheLangarHall favorite Gene Amondson narrowly lost his bid for the White House tonight. Since drowning your sorrows isn’t an options for his numerous, prohibitionist supporters, grief counselors are standing by.
