Rohanpreet, Little Prince of Patiala

There is a singing competition on Zee TV called Sa Re Ga Ma, Little Champs. I’d usually not be so excited about it, apart from the fact that I stumbled upon Rohanpreet Singh’s performance one day. He is an impressive and talented young boy. You can view one of the performances below, pay special attention to the tribute in the last part of the clip. Enjoy!

Very talented young man … please take note that he is from Patiala! I really enjoyed how he requested the time to sing the "Dil Apna Punjabi" song!

Rohanpreet is awesome – I hope he wins but even if he doesn't he has a wonderful future ahead of him. My only concern is that he stay true to himself and not start catering to the masses by singing about women and alcohol all the time. I see Punjabi videos now and am so disgusted, the clean shaven men acting like idiots, the Sardars being stero-typical, the half naked women, alcohol and basically no creativity.

Well, well, well… Rohanpreet has quite a following. This kid's voice is amazing and hearing him sing 'Dil Apna Panjabi' made it that much more memorable.

KaurBlimey, you make a good point – when are we going to start moving away from the oh-so-typical Panjabi singers and their oh-so-typical videos. In the UK, for example, they've reached a plateau of complacency in the South Asian music scene (particularly the Bhangra scene). It's quite clear people are looking to be inspired in a different way, that's why talent like Rohanpreet is so refreshing…

  9. He somehow manages to outdo Lehmber at his own song. Pure metal.

Since I understood almost nothing of what was spoken and said, who/what was his tribute to? And since this is a competition, what is his standing thus far?

Lastly, does anyone else think the bespectacled dude looks like a desi Tom Green? Especially when he's listening to Rohanpreet, staring blankly into space?

The original singer is Master Rakesh not Lehmber…

I think they're down to like 6 kids now? Someone that actually watches the show please shine some light on the issue…i'm a youtube fan 😉

  13. Vhoops. Ju are right. I still contend that he sounds a lot like Lehmber.

The competition is down to 8 contestants now. Rohanpreet is going very strong, the judges and audience love him. The "desi Tom Green" guy is actually the well-known singer, Sonu Nigam. If you've watched any Bollywood movies you will have heard his songs. And his tribute was about Punjabis. :)

    Go Rohan!

There was a slight annoyance factor with some of the judges for me, but Rohanpreet's performance overshadowed this issue!

  19. […] an earlier post, a couple of commenters mentioned the shortfalls of much of today’s Punjabi music industry […]

Yeah…no. I don't watch Bollywood, though I may have actually seen this guy perform with Gunjan in the Bay some time back.

And his tribute was about Punjabis.

Gotcha. Thanks for answering my questions, Anandica.

  24. idiot says:

haha… yes this kid should do kirtan – and understand it for what it is – and not use it to convey personal messages to girls :oP

    haha… idiot strikes again.

seriously though – there's too much beadbi in the practice of kirtan. I'm diverting I know but I've been attending divaan since I was a baby. I go to the gurdwara very infrequently now because of the degree of 'malpractice'.

Men sitting on stage gorping at women and supposedly singing to God.

I hope little Rohanpreet understands the fundementals of Kirtan and the practice of it. It's not just about 'singing'.

    …log jaane(h) eh geet he(h), eh he(h) brahm vicaar…
