Rocket Singh

I normally only watch Bollywood, if ever, to laugh.  At the acting, the ridiculous stereotypes, the loony drama.

Though when the bad acting, ridiculous stereotypes, and loony drama are played out by Sikh characters, it’s a little depressing.

A lot of people would probably say that the quality of films coming out of Bollywood is improving.  And that might be true if you’re talking about cinematography, but when it comes to depth in a plot, I haven’t seen any signs of improvement.  But maybe Bollywood will pleasantly surprise its critics with Rocket Singh?

From the trailer at least, I think it’s promising that the main character is supposed to be someone that everyone can relate to.  His religious or political identities seem to have no place in the plot.  That’s a refreshing change.

However, there are still no signs of actual depth in the script or plot.  But maybe that would be asking too much from Bollywood.

Judge for yourself. Or just enjoy the movie. It’s being released on December 11.

The film marks the coming together of the CHAK DE INDIA Director/Writer combination of Shimit Amin & Jaideep Sahni in a funny & exhilarating coming off age movie, set in the new Indian economy. Ranbir has donned the get-up of a Sikh and plays the lead role of the salesman in the film.

Synopsis:

Harpreet Singh Bedi (Ranbir Kapoor) has just graduated, and his marks are, well, let’s say a little embarrassing. But marks never stopped him from dreaming of an exciting and adventurous career, and they never will.

He takes a deep, positive breath and dives into the world of sales, rumoured to be an ultra cool career for all smart people blocked from entering medical, engineering or business schools by brainless entrance exams. It’s everything he dreamt of, with its smooth dressing, smoother talking men and women who can sell ice to an Eskimo, dreams to an insomniac, and a lifetime mobile connection to a dying man. But soon, his idea of success begins clashing with the strange ways of these ‘professionals’ and ‘bosses’ he looked up to. [GlamSham]

    haha… Oh wickid!!

well look… at least the guy looks better than the looney in 'Singh is King'. And as he says it's a film about an average kind of guy… so we can't expect it to be 'deep'. It appears to be a step in the right direction. Let's hope it really is.

Reema…it looks promising and the trailer was well done, but that music at the end: "pocket meh rocket heh" – "he's got a rocket in his pocket"…wow.

Does this phrase mean something different in India than what it means out west?

Didn't help that buddy was dancing with his hands in his pockets.

don't bet ur dollar on bollywood to promote the right image of sikhs. this movie comes from yash chopra who has for decades depicted sikhs in hindu contexts. the is bollywood's secret mantra – excite the sikhs with their depiction on bug screen and then mutilate their image through subtle hindumat behaviours. i hope this movie proves to be an exception but bollywood is supported by RSS. can't expect them to think perfect of sikhs.

yay! great… now let's get some acknowledgement for Sikh Women!!! So were all happy that Sikh men are getting a fairer portrayal in Bollywood but is it okay for sikh girls to be protrayed wrongly? It's okay that the character is called simran (or some other sikh name) and prance around with short hair and even shorter skirts?

Ranbir looks great in a get up of sardarji (ofcourse his mother is also a Sardarni). In bollywood we have Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar & Ajay Devgan that suits to be a perfect Sardarji. I am sure Abhishek Bachhan will be a great choice if he is offered a role of Sardarji.

Word to my brothers and sisters,

Please don't eat the propaganda that bollywood continuously feeds. They make movies like Singh is Kinng and this "Rocket Singh" to distract us, all the while movies portraying KPS Gill as a Supercop/Hero in the 80s/90s, and Indira Gandhi as a "Mother of India" are all continuously in production.

you know the stange thing is sikhs are better portrayed in the Pakistani Punjabi film Khamosh Pani as well as the serious Earth film starring Aamir Khan…who of course plays a sikh in Rang di basanti…question is why have we allowed lollywood or bollywood or far worse hollywood to depict us. Is our depiction in The English Patient or Bride and Prejudice any better?

Why Sikhs are so paranoid about their portrayal on big (or even small) screen? I have never noticed any other community worrying which character said what in which movie. Imagine Hindus 'censoring' Indian movies and insisting only CORRECT portrayals would be allowed. That would be the end of cinema in india. a saudi arabia like scenario.

just wondering, what is the appropriate portrayal of a Sikh character? long, flowing beard, kesari headgear, kara in right hand, white kurta pajama, beatific smile, folded hands…. am i right?

If yes, please enlighten me are there no rapists, murderers, petty criminals, perverts and plain loonies among sikhs? why a rapist always has to be a (apparently) Hindu? why sikhs cannot be shown having drinks and going a little bit over the accepted norms in their behaviour? I live in Punjab hinterland and somehow every time I see a ruckus outside a theka (wine shop) i see few turbans flying along with heaps of profanities.

Get over this obsession with clean image Gursikh portrayal and enjoy being normal.
